Several research groups have explored whether injecting immune cells that can stimulate new blood vessel growth may be able to help patients but so far, there has been little success.
The most severe form is called critical limb ischaemia, which is very painful and can lead to amputation. It’s a fairly common condition and especially in people over 60 with diabetes. Peripheral arterial disease is when blood vessels in your legs and feet are damaged and become blocked, so the limbs don’t get the blood supply they need.
If a drug can be developed to stop the effects of this variant gene, this could also unlock a new way to prevent blood vessel damage in people with diabetes. Meanwhile in Belfast, Professor Andriana Margariti has discovered a variant form of a gene that increases the risk of blood vessels becoming damaged by high blood sugar levels. Now, Professor Kearney hopes to be able to develop new approaches to treatment of diabetes. And insulin is what helps to get sugar, a major source of energy, into cells and tissues. This is important because diabetes impairs the body’s ability to make or respond to insulin. In some cases, this can lead to heartbreaking scenarios like limb amputation, blindness and infertility.
